The Murray-Darling Basin Authority, in partnership with the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, has launched the Murray-Darling Basin Leadership Program.
The program aims to support current and emerging leaders as they navigate the Basin’s complex social, environmental and economic challenges.
The Authority’s chief executive Andrew McConville said strong local leadership was critical to the future of Basin communities, particularly as they continue to adapt to water reform and the changing climate.
“The Basin faces some of the most complex and contested issues in regional Australia,” Mr McConville said.
“This program will help leaders build the skills, networks and confidence they need to work together, share knowledge and drive positive outcomes for their communities.”
The program will bring together participants from across the Basin to deepen their understanding of water management while strengthening leadership and communication skills.
A strong focus will be placed on collaboration across industries, regions and perspectives.
Australian Rural Leadership Foundation chief executive Matt Linnegar said the initiative was designed to move beyond traditional leadership models and encourage co-operation, even where views differed.
“Participants won’t always agree, but they will be equipped to make progress despite their differences and put the long‑term wellbeing of the Basin first,” Mr Linnegar said.
Delivered over three cohorts, the 10‑month residential program will begin in June 2026 and continue to be delivered through to December 2027.
It will include experiential learning, exposure to diverse viewpoints and group coaching to support real‑world action.
Participants will be drawn from a wide range of sectors and backgrounds, including community leaders, grassroots organisers and First Nations people, with selection focused on a commitment to collaboration and shared learning.
