Barrister Grace Morgan represented Johnson at Bendigo Magistrates Court, requesting a four-day committal hearing.
Magistrate Patrick Southey scheduled the hearing for August 18-21 at the same court.
Johnson, wearing a white shirt, appeared via videolink, occasionally nodding in agreement.
Family and friends of Matt Alexander flooded into court during the five-minute hearing.
TWO men charged over the shooting death of a father of two in Cohuna last year will face court on Wednesday, January 22.
Daniel Oberin, 28, and Kevin Johnson, 28, are expected to appear in person at Bendigo Magistrates Court for a committal mention.
They are both charged with one count of murder after Matt Alexander, 29, was gunned down outside his home in Dalton's Bridge on September 13.
A crime scene was established at the Eastons Rd property after Mr Alexander was found with life-threatening injuries outside his property shortly after 6am. He later died at the scene.
At a committal hearing, a magistrate considers the prosecution case against the accused and makes an assessment as to whether there is sufficient evidence for a jury to find them guilty.
The killing shocked the small community, which was thrust into the spotlight as homicide detectives, uniformed police and specialist units poured into the town, spending days scouring the area for forensic evidence.
Oberin was charged the next day after handing himself into police, while Johnson was arrested almost four weeks later.
During Johnson's filing hearing on October 9, Echuca Magistrates’ Court was told he was possibly withdrawing from drugs and this was his first time in custody.
Oberin's filing hearing was even more brief, with no application for bail made before he was remanded in custody to appear at Bendigo Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Homicide Squad detectives have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter.
