Mr Maskell started Main Street Boxing Gym in Strathmerton about four years ago and quickly outgrew two locations, prompting his move to Cobram.
He is a third generation boxer, with his grandfather Newell Alfred Joseph Maskell getting his start in tent fights while in the army during World War I.
“He was the grand light heavyweight champion in 1917... he’d run away from home and started boxing in tents,” Scott Maskell said.
It’s a sport his family has been involved in since then.
Mr Maskell got back into boxing a few years ago after some personal struggles, and knows well the mental and physical benefits it can provide.
“I reckon it saved me ... it’s a good outlet,” he said, adding that he thought younger people could also reap the benefits of regular boxing classes.
“It’s a good outlet to keep them off the street and out of trouble ... they get in the gym and they don’t wanna fight in the street.”
He said boxing had become much more popular lately and he believed country boxers were getting “pretty good”.
Mr Maskell is an accomplished coach and currently has one of his fighters, Marcus Davis, getting ready to compete for a state title in Sale.
The new facility in Raco Crt, Cobram, features a full-size ring, open spaces and multiple bags to work on.
Classes will cater to everyone, no matter their goal, fitness level, gender or age.
And with all the space for the full-size ring, Mr Maskell hopes to host sparring sessions and fights.
“I’m hoping good things, big things for country boxing.”
The Fighters Academy is located at 5 Raco Crt, Cobram, and officially opened on November 27.
