Echuca intersection upgrades delayed to September

An update on planned works to a dangerous intersection in Echuca has been provided by the Victorian Government.

The construction of two ‘wombat’ crossings at the intersection of Hare and Heygarth Sts was scheduled to begin at the start of this year.

A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson said works were now expected to start in September following delays.

“We’re planning to commence works on intersection upgrades in central Echuca in coming months,” they said.

“We’ve worked with (Campaspe Shire Council) and other road safety stakeholders to finalise a design for the crossings, which will boost safety for everyone travelling on foot in the area while also respecting the town’s heritage.”

Changes to the design, including necessary custom-built light poles that are consistent with the area’s heritage, have delayed the project.

The intersection received $435,000 of funding last year under the Federal Black Spot Program 2024-25 round.

Both legs of Hare St will receive wombat crossings, and the southern leg of Hare St will be converted to be left-turn only, preventing vehicles from crossing the intersection.
