The first steps towards demolishing the former Maternal and Child Health building in Pyramid Hill have started.

Earlier this year, the Kelly St building was deemed to be in a state of disrepair and would require significant investment to make it useable, according to Loddon Shire Council.

The council owns the building and resolved to demolish it to enable an extension of the adjacent open space.

Asbestos has now been removed from the building in preparation for its demolition, which is scheduled to begin in late July or early August.

A maternal and child health service will be available at the Pyramid Hill Community Centre, run in conjunction with Northern District Community Health.

Vacant since 2020, the building has been surplus to the council’s operational needs for several years and two community proposals to use the building have fallen through.

Following the Pyramid Hill streetscape project, the council decided removing the building would enhance the overall amenity of the redeveloped space.

The demolition is scheduled to take about five days, with landscaping of the site to follow.
