The game itself is an annual match played in the memory of Buck McPhee, who played for both clubs.
Furthermore, it was the Emus’ life members and sponsors day.
Playing against the GV Giants is one of the highlights on the calendar, as it is always played in the true spirit of masters football, something Buck promoted with pride.
It was the Emus who got the win in a real tight contest by a mere few goals.
The Emus played a fantastic brand of footy, sticking to the game plan until the final siren.
Phil Arnot was busy all day with plenty of attacks from defence, which set up opportunities further up the ground.
Clint Jurey and Jon Beach were proving a headache up forward, clunking some big grabs.
Mark Van Poeteren, in his 150th masters appearance, was the recipient of some hard-contested ground work from David Chapman and slotted a goal from the tightest of angles.
Chapman set up a few goals during the game, keeping the Emus in front.
Jacko O’Brien kicked a nice goal on the run from 48 meters out and must have been doing rehearsals on goal celebrations with Jon Beach during the week.
Troy Arlow was prominent all day playing in defence, on ball, and forward line and deservedly won the spirit of masters award voted on by the GV boys.
Mick Davis and Troy Ramsay worked tirelessly all game, with gut-busting running up and down the ground while getting plenty of the footy.
Bruce McCahon, returning from holiday, spent time in defence and up forward and did not miss a beat with his hard tackling and attack on the ball.
Chris Hagan played a fantastic game on the wing and through the middle, setting up numerous forward entries and finishing with a goal himself, while Josh Hunter was once again prolific through the midfield.
Thank you must go to Justin Voss, who assisted with coaching on the day, and Chris Godfrey who did the running and water.
Thank you to the Lockington Football Netball Club for welcoming us again and providing great hospitality throughout the day.
The Emus play their last game for the season next Saturday in Maryborough.
As always, everyone is welcome to join us for training at Echuca South Oval every Wednesday from 6pm.
