The 21-year-old is a medium fast opening bowler who can swing the ball both ways, bowls off spin and is a high order batsman.
Webb has four years of Victorian Cricket Premier experience, two with Frankston, debuting at just 15 years-of-age and two seasons at Casey South Melbourne.
He then moved back to his former junior club Hastings where he was a prolific run scorer, including the blasting of 109 off 121 balls against Rosebud in District Division.
For the last four seasons, he has played in England’s summer season, our winter season.
A most promising junior, Webb represented Australia well in Under 16s, 17s and 19s teams, making runs, including 38 against Pakistan Under 16s, and making his presence felt with the ball.
“I prefer batting, but I don’t mind trouble with batsmen,” Webb said.
“I’m looking forward to playing here.
“ ‘Pop’ (Chris Thissen) has moved up here and my Mum and Dad are thinking about moving up – they have holidayed a lot up here.
“And I’m setting up my (handyman) business here.”
At practice last Thursday at Victoria Park, the six-foot Webb looked sharp off just five paces, getting the ball up off a good length, bowling to captain coach Kyle Archibald.
His run up is 22 paces in matches.
“He’s a big, strong lad,” the club leader said.
“I’m sure the word will get around about how fast and fiery he is; and he can bat too and bowl off spin.”
Webb, who turns 22 on New Year’s Day, said he doesn’t turn the ball, but the finger spinner admitted he has a variety of deliveries.
Archibald is pleased with numbers and keenness at training.
“Training’s going well; we haven’t lost anyone,” he said.
“Talking about losing, Reid Clarke has lost several kilos and is looking terrific – he’s Yarrawonga’s most eligible bachelor!”
The coach expects wicketkeeper Reid to be a prolific run scorer this season.
Club president, Glenn Brear is thrilled with the signing of Webb.
A multi-premiership cricket coach, Brear wants to see the Lakers back in the thick of action come season’s finals time.
“It’s an absolutely major signing,” he said.
“Devlin will give great impetus to us being as a strong club and we hope the public will get down and see him, all of our team, in action, starting in the third week in October.”
The Lakers have the bye in round one, which starts Saturday, October 11.
