The club hosted the 60 and Over group on Wednesday of last week, when 104 bowlers competed on a cloudy but warm day.

Alan Bensons team from Rochester were the winners on a countback from Laurie Quinn’s Echuca team.
Last Thursday’s men’s jackpot pairs, attended by 24 teams, were played in bright sunshine with occasional gusts of wind on excellent greens.
There were six, two game winners starting with Paul Leach/Peter Cecil (+6), Stan Barker/Ashley French (+10), George Thornley/Jerome Shaw (+10), Jim Ferrier/Eddie Blampied (+17), runners-up on a count back, Kevin McGreevy/Col Berryman (+17) and the winners Bruce O’Neale/Chris Campbell (+19).
The best one game went to Norm Hodge/John Blair (+16).
Friday Scroungers sponsored by Intersport and Roma Pizzas, were won by June Clifford, with runner-up Erica Mostert.
Saturday social bowlers played 2-4-2 pairs, with the winners Ian Page and Ross Young taking home the Pastoral Hotel vouchers from Ivan Hicks and Col Berryman, who won the Roma Pizza vouchers.
Monday’s social bowls was cancelled due to the weather.
Tuesday's Essen sponsored five-a-side competition played the final round in sunny, but breezy conditions after being washed out the previous week.
The weekly winners were Emus (Di Payne, Rosa Armstrong, Jill Young, Anna Meyer and Doug Goldsworthy).
The lucky draw from the washed-out week went to Magpies (Robyn Tooley, Eddie Blampied, Andrew Humphrys, June Clifford and Alan Hopson).
The overall winners of the five-week competition were Rosellas (John Dinsdale, Belinda Chong, Gaye Goodwin, Lisa Humphrys and Cec Moss).

There was again no winner of the $4000 Mini Bingo jackpot last Friday, so hopefully someone will get lucky tonight (Friday) at drinks and nibbles between 4 and 6pm.
The winner of the members' draw was Joan Dovaston, who pocketed $50, and the prize goes back to $40 tonight.
The men’s and ladies consistency breakfast fours to be held on Friday, October 10, are in need of entries.
Breakfast at 8.30am followed by bowls at 9am.

Moama Bowling Club
The initial club championship of the season was held at Moama Bowling Club on Sunday, September 21, seeing 66 bowlers contest the club drawn triples.
10 women’s teams were split into two sections of five and played in a round-robin format with five, eight-end matches.
Winners of section 1 – Ann Vanderkley, Margot Brennan and Marilyn Stephenson (s) contested a hard-fought final against the trio of Rhonda Solomon, Deana Hogan, and Robyn Thomassen (s) coming out victorious with three-shots making the difference.
In the men’s side of the draw, two sections of six teams played out the round-robin matches to determine the finalists.
In a one-sided final, the triple of Bernie Cruise, David Lonnie and Trevor Eastwell couldn’t get it going and succumbed to the winning side of Phil Bell, Dennis O’ Bryan, skipped by Kevin Connolly.
This was a second consecutive Triples title for Kevin.
On Wednesday and Thursday, October 1 and 2, the club is hosting one of the largest junior bowls events in Australia.
The ‘ Diamond Jack’ singles will feature 72 bowlers aged 18 and under from all over Australia
This is the third year the event has been played, and it has evolved into one of the major junior tournaments.

Closure of greens
Please note that the greens will be closed on a Monday from now on.
This is to ensure that the greenskeeper is able to prepare the greens adequately now that the 2025-26 season has begun.
The greens are open for play Tuesday – Sunday from 10 am unless there’s a ‘green closed’ sign on display.
Triples tournament
Last Saturday, September 13, Rochester Bowls Club hosted a very successful triples tournament.
Winners – Richard Buckley (Kyneton), runners-up – Craig Hillier (Deniliquin) and 3rd – Peter Holzer (Mathoura).
The tournament committee wish to thank everyone who put up their hand to lend a hand, in particular BBQ team Mick McArdle and Hedley Moon, bar staff Mick Ellis, Ken Burns and Bev Hetherington, Leanne Pickens for selling the raffle tickets, Mathew Walles for preparing the greens, and the kitchen staff.
Mural
One of Ellsworth Overton’s murals has been installed on the North fence line.
The mural will remain on the property of the bowls club until someone in the public chooses to purchase it.

On Friday, September 19, 19 bowlers braved the windy and showery conditions.
The winning team consisted of Anton Gusak, Heather Curnick and Fay Wolfe.
There was no winner of the jackpot.

Each Thursday morning from 10 am.
Marg Knight currently has five new bowlers who have all chosen to try their hand at the sport.
Leigh Milgate is also on hand guiding other bowlers through a training session.
Pennant
A pennant practice game was played at White Hills on Sunday, September 21.
This was a busy day for the Rochester community, with many attending Dos Hanson’s 100th birthday celebration and the GVL grand final to cheer on the Rochy Tigers.

Round five sees Rochester hosting Moama and in round ten, Moama will host Rochester.
60 and Over
The three game winners at Echuca on September 17 were the Rochester team of Allan Benson, Bert Smolenaars, Kevin Hall and Tim Quinlan.

Lockington Bowls Club
The club hosted members of the Gunbower Bowling Club on Saturday for a practice match with the annual prestigious stirrers spoon up for grabs.
This event has been played between the two clubs since the early 1990s and the Spoon is awarded to the losing club.
The two main instigators were V ‘Chicken’ Dillon and the late Lanced Mounsey.
On Saturday, the recipient was the home club Lockington with a losing score 45-70.

The Sixty and Over competition started at the Echuca Bowls Club on Wednesday.
A few hard-luck stories from the local members, but it was great to have the season started after a couple of hold-ups, and the hospitality and greens were excellent.
The Wednesday Scrounge was cancelled, but will be held this week for the final session before the Pennant season begins.
Scrounge will be held on a Saturday.
The women will hold their social bowls on a Tuesday until Pennant begins.
Last Tuesday, the social bowls were cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions.
The popular barefoot bowls will commence on Tuesday, October 7, at 6.30pm for 7pm start.

On Sunday, October 19 the club will hold the prestigious annual waterwheel classic fours starting at 9.30am.

The Campaspe and District 60 and over bowls group held their weekly bowls at Rochester on a mild and cloudy spring day.
There were 26 teams of four, that is 104 bowlers competing for a chook.
Some teams had players short and were filled in with Rochester Players.
There were three three-game winners.
Unfortunately, Bill Branders team from Mathoura only had two bowls near the Jack and missed out.
David Grant's team from Stanhope were second with three bowls near the jack.
The team consisted of David Grant lead, Barry Williams second, John Gibbs third and Geoff Crilly was their Skipper.
The winners, with five bowls near the jack were Anton Gusak’s team from Rochester.
The team consisted of Ian Dennis lead, Alan Williams second, Graham third, and Anton Gusak as their Skipper.
Both teams’ players won a chook each.
Next Wednesday is at Mathoura starting at 11am.

Weekly Highlights
On Thursday, Col Heywood had his second hole-in-one in the last few years, but Steven Jones arguably went one better when his 2 iron on the par five eighteenth hole on the East found the cup for a rare albatross.
Scholsey won A-grade and was rightfully miffed that Steven’s one good shot received more airtime than his great round.
Jeff Ridge finished with the handbrake on but easily had the best score of the day.
Fraser Buchanan had great scores on both Saturday and Sunday, with John Taylor in the placings on Thursday and Saturday as well.
It was a three-way countback in the Saturday ladies comp. with Maxine Aitken edging out the two Sue’s.
Jason Kerr from Deniliquin won the Monday 18-hole event, with Mairi Eltringham winning the September Stellar Award with a win in the 9-hole event.
Mick Fitzpatrick won the September President’s trophy from a host of players with 41 stableford points.
Bill Patterson, Mark Langenbacher and Tom Chadwick all had great days on the West course.

Wednesday 9-hole social golf partners were drawn for a 3-person Ambrose played over the back nine.
The winners were Alex McQuibban, Laurie Radley and Shane Bywaters, shooting two under par 34 net 29.
Mike Austin, Chris Trewin, and Brendan McCarty were next best (31) on a countback from Bruce Major, Des Hocking and Greg Watkins.
Nearest-the-pin went to Des Hocking for his close shot to the 12th hole.
The Rochester Ladies played their last official event for the year last Friday.
Captain Barbara McCarty had another great round to win on 43 Stableford points, and the runner-up was Karen Taylor with 36 points.
Karen Taylor was closest to the pin on 3 and 5, Louise Williamson on 8 and Lauren Coghill on 16.
Saturday's men's competition was a par round.
Peter Anderson finally had a win with +3, Troy McInnes was next on a countback from Chris Trewin and Col Johnson all on +2.
Other ball winners were Shane Bywaters +1 and Shane Connelly square with the card.
Bywaters had a day out to win nearest-the-pins on 3,16, and for his second shot to the 18th scrape, while Captain Darren White was closest to the 5th and young Zac McInness played a good second shot to the 9th hole.

A terrific turnout enjoyed the day’s competition, with 18 teams including visitors from Howlong, Bamawm, Boort, Bendigo, Rochester, Maldon, Valley View, Rushworth, Mitiamo and Murray Downs.
The theme of the day was hot scoring, none better than the event’s winners, Kelly Cheong (Rushworth) and Locky members Ron Dixon and Tom Scurrah, who combined brilliantly to score 67-9.67-57.33.
Runners-up were the sponsors' team of Matt Hoare, Wayne Olchorn (Howlong) and Todd Louttit (Bamawm) with a super 63-4.83-58.17 (7-under par, the equal best scratch score of the day).

Goulburn Valley Veteran Golfers
85 players participated in the first round of the GV Veteran Golfers championships at Hill Top Golf and Country Club on Monday, September 22.
The weather was okay, moving from 12 to 15°C throughout the day, but with a chilling SW wind blowing fairly steady between 20-30km/hr and a brief 0.2 mm shower.
We were pleased to introduce a new sponsor for today’s trophies; Jac Farrow of Pit Lane Golf Carts and Mobility.
The championship sponsor over the three events is our long-time supporter, Goulburn Murray Credit Union (GMCU).
Today’s results and the championship (best two results over three events) is decided on stroke scores.
The winner in A-grade was Graeme Willoughby of Deniliquin with net 70 and the runner-up, decided on countback, was Vincent Chan, Shepparton on 71 net.
These two also featured as winner and runner-up last year but in reverse order.
Bill Murphy, Mooroopna, saluted in B-grade with 74 net, and Neil Parker, Numurkah, was runner-up on 75 net.
C-grade was dominated by Kialla with Ian Clarke and Leo Hartup leading with 73 and 74 net respectively.
Nearest-the-pin was contested on the 9th hole at 125 metres.
A-grade was claimed by Allan Newby, Numurkah; B-grade went to Peter Leahy, Mooroopna; and C-grade to Ian Scurrah, Lockington.

Two teams from Goulburn Valley Vets contested the Victorian Veteran Golfers annual teams challenge held at Portland Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday 15-16 September.
The event was staged in atrocious weather, with blustery winds on the Monday and more wind and rain on the Tuesday.
Team 1 of Bruce Brown (Merrigum), Bill Murphy (Mooroopna) and Greg Hall (Merrigum) achieved 18th place (40 teams contesting) but Team 2 did not finish.
Our next event, and the second round of the championship, is at Numurkah Golf Club on October 6.
Remember that the championship is decided on the aggregate of the best two rounds out of the three to be played – you can afford one bad round.

22 Members played two games and then enjoyed a great morning tea including a big birthday cake for Johnny Tarrant to celebrate his 90th Birthday.
A few members stayed to play a 3rd game.

Our winner was Jill Graham winning three games with a +14.

Rich River White defeated Shepparton four games to two at home.
Rich River team member Kenn Boal was in fine form, winning his singles with a triple peel 26 hoops to Shepparton’s Kerri-Ann Organ 23 hoops.
RR’s Cherie Lessing won her singles 11-4 against Shepparton’s Gayle Vale.
Doc Ryant won his singles against Louise Vale 11-8, but sadly RR’s Pat Rice lost to Shepparton’s Kevin Milner.
This week Rich River Blue hosted Quarry Hill.
Quarry Hill was far too strong, winning 5 games to 1, 108 hoops to 60, and putting Quarry Hill on top of the ladder.
Quarry Hill’s Lois Kirk played extremely well, pegging out in her singles with a triple peel.

Quarry Hill played well and outclassed Rich River Blue on the day.
Golf Pennant- Thursday, September 18– Rich River Kangas
In this week's Golf Croquet pennant, Rich River Kangas hosted Mooroopna, and both teams were undefeated.
The Rich River Kangas team of Cherie Lessing, Sandra Retallick, Lyn Keillor and Helen Brieley played Mooroopna’s John Young, Taryn Arho, Denise Boldiston and Amanda Threlfall.
After the opening singles, scores were level 2 games 24 hoops each.
Rich River won three of the next four singles but the games were very close.
At the end of the singles, Rich River were ahead 5 games to 3, but Mooroopna picked up three games to one in the doubles, winning the match in a very close 6 games 74 hoops to 6 games 67 hoops.
Golf Croquet – Thursday, September 18
14 players competed against each other in doubles croquet this morning.
Only two players won all three games: Cheryl Lees and Ian Grant.
Both players have been playing well lately with the win going to Cheryl Lees scoring 3 games +12 hoops, and Ian Grant being the runner-up scoring 3 games +8 hoops.
Golf Croquet – The Vincent Shield- Tuesday, September 24
Roy and Mae Vincent both held a range of positions on the Rich River Croquet Club committee over their years of playing, and were great advocates of croquet and the club.
Both won a range of Divisional Championships across Association and Golf Croquet.
The Vincent Shield is a Rich River Golf Croquet event where partners are drawn for the whole competition.
The event commenced in 2018 and is held annually.
It was a cold dull morning for the playing of the Vincent Shield, but fortunately, the sun came out and took the chill out of the breeze.
22 people had a lovely time competing, and everyone enjoyed the event, whether they won or lost.
Greg Vincent, Roy and Mae Vincent’s son, presented the trophy and gifts to the winning team of Cheryl Lees and Ian Grant, who won 3 games +15 hoops, with the runner-up team of Steve Potter and Russell Smyth scoring 3 games +11 hoops.
Congratulations to Cheryl and Ian on a well-deserved win.
Kyabram Pigeon Club
The Kyabram Racing Pigeon Club returned to Werrimul for another hotly contested event.
139 birds representing 10 trainers took part in the Werrimul 2 event, pigeons making the long trek back to their owners lofts.
Kyabram’s Gary Beavis topped the standings on this occasion, his charges reaching an average velocity of 1734.74 metres per minute.
The Echuca duo of Rod Clark and Ray Armstrong filled out the podium, with velocities of 1731.31 and 1727.21 respectively.
The club will continue to range further afield this weekend as it holds an event from the South Australian border on Sunday.
