In a bold move to embrace the cult classic’s famously rowdy tradition, Echuca-Moama Theatre Company is encouraging full audience participation at every performance, transforming the theatre into a lively, immersive event rather than a sit-and-stay affair.
Director Tricia Deakin said the production was leaning into what had made Rocky Horror a global phenomenon for decades.
“Rocky Horror isn’t just a show — it’s a shared experience,” Ms Deakin said.
“The call-backs, the reactions, the energy from the audience, it’s all part of what makes it so iconic. We want people to feel like they’re in it with us.”
To help audiences confidently join the fun, EMTC will offer official audience participation prop bags to buy in the foyer before each show.
Priced at $15, each bag includes venue-approved props and a “call-back cheat sheet” designed to guide newcomers and refresh seasoned fans.
A limited number — just 40 per performance — will be available, with a discounted bundle option alongside the official program for $20.
Adding a local touch to the experience, one of the showbag props will be a specially created 1950s-style Riverine Herald, generously printed by the sponsor, used on stage as the ‘rain protector’ for Janet in the famous storm scene.
But while the production is embracing the chaos, organisers are also drawing a clear line when it comes to safety.
Only props included in the official bags will be permitted inside the theatre, with strict instructions that items are not to be thrown at the stage or fellow audience members.
“It’s about capturing that electric Rocky Horror atmosphere without crossing the line,” Ms Deakin said.
“We want the laughs, the call-backs and the wild costumes, but also a space where everyone feels safe and respected.”
Audience members are also being reminded to time their call-backs carefully so they enhance, rather than interrupt, the performance.
Costumes are strongly encouraged, with audiences expected to turn out in everything from fishnets and feather boas to full character transformations.
Rocky Horror will be performed at the Paramount for six shows only from May 28 to 31.
