Bridge chaos after crash

Traffic came to a standstill on the Yarrawonga–Mulwala traffic bridge on Saturday evening, November 1 during one of the busiest weekends of the year after a two-vehicle collision.

The incident occurred at around 9pm near the middle of the bridge, at the section where it dips and starts to bend. Fortunately, no one appeared to have suffered an injury from the accident.

Emergency crews from both Yarrawonga and Mulwala responded quickly, managing to limit the bridge closure to around one hour. One lane was then reopened while one of the damaged vehicles was prepared for towing.

Yarrawonga Police attended the scene and confirmed a 49 year old male driver from Lancaster had driven onto the opposite side of the bridge before colliding head on with a Toyota four wheel drive.

When spoken to by police the male refused a preliminary breath test (PBT), as a result his licence was immediately suspended, and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Yarrawonga Police Sergeant Colin Boyle said the male is facing a mandatory licence suspension for refusing PBT and other traffic offences.

“Anyone with footage from this incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000) or Yarrawonga Police,” Sgt Boyle said.
