Land in the former Macorna estate could soon be surrendered to Gannawarra Shire Council, as 27 properties in the area have had outstanding rates for three years.
At its most recent meeting, council committed to obtaining a formal valuation of all properties within the Kerang-Macorna and Macorna-Pyramid Rds subdivision.
Council will write to all landowners within this boundary to determine interest in relinquishing certain land parcels back to local government.
The decision follows the adoption of the Surrender of Land policy in November last year, and approval for council to recover rates and charges for 49 properties across the region.
Mayor Garner Smith said ratepayers in the former estate had expressed interest in transferring the land during the debt collection process.
“Landowners of four additional properties within this estate have also expressed an interest in transferring their land back to council, resulting in this process,” he said.
Information from the estate’s landowners and the formal evaluation process will determine council’s next steps, and the future of the sites.
