Forensic testing has been completed on the human remains found at Victoria Park in recent weeks, prompting Victoria Police to step away from its investigation.
A police spokesperson confirmed the remains were “determined to be historical”, with further inquiries directed to the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council.
“Victoria Police have no further involvement in this matter,” they said.
An area of the Campaspe Shire Council building site was declared a crime scene following the discovery on Friday, February 13.
Director of communities Jo Bradshaw advised that the works had been temporarily impacted by the discovery.
“Council is working respectfully and in co-operation with the appropriate authorities to ensure all legal and cultural protocols are followed,” she said.
“At this stage, there is no update on how this discovery may affect the project.”
