The home side made the brighter start, narrowly leading 11-10 at quarter-time after an even opening term, having come into proceedings off the back of successive victories over Deniliquin and Cobram.
Jinaya Nurse and Indiana Phillips combined strongly in attack for the Magpies, while Ellie Morgan and Felicity Geisler kept Rumbalara within touching distance with accurate finishing at the other end.
The hosts at Moama Recreation Reserve gradually built momentum through the second quarter, stretching their lead to 21-18 by half-time.
The impressive Phillips was particularly influential during this stretch, helping the Magpies maintain scoreboard pressure whenever Rumbalara threatened to level the contest.
The third quarter proved decisive in the trajectory of the result, with Moama producing its strongest period of the afternoon to extend the margin to six goals at the final break, leading 32-26.
Holly Swatton added valuable support in the shooting circle, while Moama’s defensive pressure through the midcourt disrupted Rumbalara’s transition play and forced turnovers at key moments.
Despite trailing entering the final term Rumbalara continued to push hard.
Morgan and Geisler repeatedly reduced the margin and gave the visitor hope late in the contest, but the Magpies held their composure under pressure to close out the four-goal win.
Phillips finished with 19 goals for victors, while Nurse added 15 and Swatton contributed five in a balanced attacking performance.
Reflecting on a resilient all-round showing from her team, Magpies coach Carrie Carter was pleased with what she saw from her charges.
“Because we’re such a young and new side, we’ve been working on connection on court and the whole team performance,” she said.
“We played Deniliquin last week and it was quite a similar game to this week’s – we knew they were going to be tough games – but the whole court defence and connection of the team has really helped.
“We’re starting to gel, Indiana was really strong in attack and combined well with Jinaya Nurse and Holly Swatton and our defensive circle is brand new and the connection is amazing.
“They gave our shooters a lot of opportunities for reward with their hard work.
“We knew at the start of the season – with such a young team – that they’re going to have their up and down moments, but they’ve been building consistency.”
For Rumbalara, Morgan led the way with 18 goals and Geisler added 13 in another strong display in a performance that was laden with positives.
The Magpies will have the opportunity to continue their purple patch in round nine of the campaign away at Finley.
“I think we’ll be strong enough to win and it’ll be a good opportunity to play some of our juniors too, who are quite strong and have been for a long time,” Carter said.
“We’ve got Chelsea Wright going overseas for four rounds, so we’ll be starting to work on some new combinations – she’s a strong wing attack we’ll need to replace her for those rounds.”
Elsewhere, Tongala claimed a dominant 77-16 victory over Congupna, while Numurkah overwhelmed Finley 65-36 and Nathalia defeated beat Echuca United 70-57 to reinforce its premiership aspirations.
League pacesetter Mulwala also strengthened its title credentials with a 57-39 win over Deniliquin to stay top of the ladder after eight games played.
