Unlike many modern stations, Kyabram proudly preserves an extensive collection of historical items, trophies and memorabilia dating back to the brigade’s origins in the early 1890s.
“It's a really good thing for the community to actually come in and see that history that's on display in the station, which is quite rare,” Kyabram Fire Brigade member Kim Morrison said.
The free event also offers residents an opportunity to step inside the fire station, explore behind the scenes, get practical advice and learn what to do when fire threatens as part of Victoria’s Get Fire Ready initiative.
With a potentially challenging fire season fast approaching, Mr Morrison said education and community safety were top priorities for the brigade.
“For us, it’s part of our community service — highlighting what’s coming up for the fire season, making sure that everyone in the community is aware of their responsibilities, but also giving them a chance to find out more about fire safety in the home,” Mr Morrison said.
“One of our big missions in terms of CFA is education.”
The event includes a barbecue, station and truck tours, kids’ colouring competitions and fire safety giveaways, including fire blankets and extinguishers.
Attendees can also learn about volunteer pathways through the CFA’s Lend a Hand initiative.
“It’s not always about being a firefighter — there are lots of other community service jobs that we have in the brigade,” Mr Morrison said.
“It’s just a great opportunity to see behind the scenes, see what’s actually at the fire station, and see all the equipment and history that’s there.”
The Kyabram CFA Open Day will take place at the station’s 29 Bradley St site on Sunday, October 25, from 10am to 4pm.
