The star acquisition of Kaine Herbert is only one part of an exciting puzzle being put together this off-season.
Also announced is the return of favoured son Lachie Schultz — but before any supporters get too excited, it won’t be in a playing capacity.
Schultz still has AFL duties to attend to at Collingwood, but will also take up an under-18 player mentor role at the Mowers next year.
“Shooter” knows all too well about the journey from Moama to the big time.
The Mowers were the launchpad for his career, Schultz a junior before transitioning into seniors — with many long-time supporters no doubt remembering his best-on-ground performance in the 2015 Murray Football League grand final.
It’s such displays which put him in the shop window for the 2018 AFL draft, picked by Fremantle at 57.
And now he’s looking to give back.
“Working around his AFL commitments, Lachie will be involved in training sessions over pre-season and assist on game days, including being the runner or on bench duties when available,” Moama said in its Facebook post announcing the appointment.
“He will also deliver online sessions covering leadership, goal setting and the importance of keeping football fun.
“Just as importantly, Lachie will be a sounding board for our young players throughout the season, offering advice, encouragement and guidance from someone who has experienced the journey from country football to the highest level.”
