Councillors defied officers’ recommendation to move a motion implementing entry fees, pointing to the value the fee-free initiative offered the community despite declining numbers.
In moving a motion to allow members free entry for another summer, Cr Adrian Weston said several factors had influenced the venues’ declining patronage.
“One thing is for sure, irrespective that (the numbers of patrons) have gone down a bit, they’re way higher than what they were prior to the fees being waived,” he said.
“It’s worth recognising, particularly for some of the smaller communities, just the critical and important role the outdoor pools provide, particularly for youth and children.
“(They serve as) a social gathering point to maintain and build the social fabric of the small communities, so councillors, rest assured the waiving of fees has been well received and well appreciated by all of the communities which have got pools.”
During the debate, deputy mayor Tony Marwood raised his concerns about patron behaviour, publicly reaffirming council’s commitment to keeping its staff safe and flagging the potential introduction of security during peak usage periods.
While entry for members will be free, a fee for casual users who don’t want to fill in a membership form will be introduced.
Casual fees will be:
Family day pass - $20
Adult day pass - $6.20
Adult day pass - concession - $4.70
Child day pass - $4.70
The motion passed unanimously.
