The Rotary Club of Echuca Moama would like to remind locals that although they can't be obtained in the usual way this year, it is still important to test for bowel cancer.
“Annually, Rotary Clubs support the Australian Anti Cancer Council and run what we call Bowelscan Month during which we distribute Bowel Cancer test kits through local chemists,” club service chairman Mike Stansbury said.
“Rotary subsidises the cost of testing and producing and distribution of the kits, there is no financial benefit to local Rotary clubs.”
However, this year chemists have been unable to have the tests available in store due to COVID-19.
“This year after first distributing kits to chemists in April, the government advised the program be curtailed in favour of an online supply process where kits can be ordered from the internet,” Mt Stansbury said.
While tests can still be purchased for the usual $20, there will also be a small approximate fee of $3.50.
“Our great local chemists will be happy to help anybody that needs assistance accessing the internet,” he said.
After purchasing the test, residents are asked to place their sample in the provided kit receptacle and posts it in the return post pack to the processing laboratory.
The laboratory will then inform the client of results as well as their specified GP and Rotary collates the statistics to the authorities.
The Rotary Club stresses it is still important to consider doing the test as early detection could potentially save lives.
“In this year of Covid-19 awareness, the vital matter of community testing for Bowel Cancer is being overlooked by many potential victims,” he said.
“This is causing concern amongst oncologists and community health specialists as early detection is vital for successful treatment outcomes.”
If you would like to order a test to be sent to your home or need more information, you can find it at rotarybowelscan.com.au
