Senior Constable James Scambler of Echuca Criminal Investigation Unit said police allege the 37-year-old entered the store, on the corner of Haverfield St and Ogilvie Ave, about 8am today and stole some pies before fleeing.
Snr Constable Scambler said a 46-year-old female staff member followed her outside and approached the woman who then produced ‘‘some sort of edged weapon’’.
‘‘She (staff member) was a little bit frightened but she is okay,’’ he said.
Police arrived soon after and arrested the woman a short distance away.
She was charged with shop theft and assault with a weapon.
No-one was injured during the incident.
The woman was bailed to appear at Echuca Magistrates Court on April 2.
