Tania Walker, 35, and Daniel Simmons, 44, appeared in Bendigo County Court on Wednesday charged with child homicide.
Both out on bail, Walker and Simmons had their matters adjourned to July 25 at the same court.
The pair was arrested in Echuca on March 19 after Homicide Squad detectives made a breakthrough in their cold case investigation into the death of Angela, who died in suspicious circumstances in Echuca in 2008.
The toddler had more than 20 injuries, including internal haemorrhaging, rib injuries and a fractured pelvis.
Neither have been charged with inflicting the fatal injuries, but the Office of Public Prosecutions has said the basis for the charge was that Walker and Simmons were negligent in their care of the 23-month-old.
ACM reported that medical expert Dr Joanna Tully reviewed the case last year and reported earlier medical intervention could have saved Angela’s life.
According to Andrew Grant, acting for the OPP, it was the couple’s failure to seek medical attention earlier that caused Angela’s death.
