Before he knew it, his workload had increased tenfold after a Facebook post on the local community page took off, well and truly kickstarting his new venture: Jesse James Mowing.
For Mr Mulcahy, it’s his first foray into independent business, but it also signifies the realisation of a long-held goal.
Joining forces with sister-in-law Amanda Mulcahy, who is in charge of admin and book-keeping, and assisted by his carer Geoff Hudson, it’s also a chance for a fresh start after making the move from Swan Hill to Echuca last year in trying circumstances.
“Unfortunately, in January last year, his mother passed away, so Jess came to live with us,” Ms Mulcahy said.
“Part of his NDIS goal was to start his own lawn-mowing business, and we finally found a carer to support him in starting that.
“His business has grown so quickly, so he’s resigned from VIVID. He’s had 11 clients so far, and that was just from the Facebook post.
“Jess has been obsessed with mowing for 20 years. He’s super excited, and we’re super proud of him.”
Armed with his mowing equipment, business cards, and a new slogan — Passion for Slashin’ — the 29-year-old hopes to expand his business further, but right now, he is simply pleased that it’s all up and started, working alongside Geoff and Amanda.
“Echuca’s quite nice,” he said.
“I’ve enjoyed myself, and the money is great.”
Having a carer assist has been pivotal in what has been a team effort, according to Amanda.
“Having Geoff is a godsend,” she said.
“Having someone like him to help (Jesse) achieve his goals is something we’re really appreciative of.”
