The original heritage building was the site of several well known businesses, including Milledges Ironmonger, before Beechworth Bakery eventually moved into the site in 2001.
Maddicks Garage and a number of other small businesses, including Drover's Bakehouse, have also operated from the site.
Beechworth Bakery founder Tom O'Toole said at the time he had confidence in the Echuca bakery.
“I'm passionate about the region — beautiful rivers, a great climate, and a colourful history,” Mr O'Toole told the Riv in September 2001.
“It's a great visitor destination, and it's a proactive town with a terrific line-up of events throughout the year.
“We are prepared to work long hours, put in the staff training and fine-tune our plans to settle in Echuca for the long run — we are very committed.”
Current bakery manager Simone Coutts has been with the bakery for 10 years, and a manager for three.
“We're excited to have been here for 20 years,” she said.
“We're so grateful for the local support during COVID.
“We've managed to stay open the whole time, and it's been a topsy-turvy 18 months, but we're so proud of our staff and thankful to our local customers.”
Beechworth Bakery currently has 48 people on staff, with ages ranging from 15 to 69, with some staff members being on board since nearly the beginning.
While COVID-19 restrictions have prevented the bakery from celebrating too much, there were two deals to be had on their famous beestings and pies: buy one, get one for 10 cents.
Beechworth Bakery is open 6.30 am to 5.30 pm daily.
