Police declared two crime scenes after the armed robbery of the Armaguard vehicle in Hervey Bay, southern Queensland, on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to a shopping centre in the suburb of Eli Waters after reports a man had threatened an armoured vehicle security officer with a firearm at 6.33am.
"Initial enquiries indicate a physical altercation ensued and the security officer fired a shot, before the man fled the scene in an orange Ford Ranger with a significant quantity of cash," police said in a statement.
No one was injured in the incident.
The vehicle was intercepted less than an hour later and the man was taken into police custody.
Armaguard vans are heavily fortified and usually driven by armed guards to transport large amounts of cash, and robberies of them are rare.
In 2018 an Armaguard van was targeted by two gun-wielding men who fled in an awaiting getaway car in Sydney's southwest.
