The pair were re-elected to lead council for the remainder of its term, defeating Cr Gary Pappin in their respective races at an extraordinary meeting on September 22.
Cr Harvie said his focus for the next two years would be ensuring the financial sustainability of the council while Cr Gorey said he’d support the mayor to keep delivering for ratepayers.
“My biggest goal is to get the government to increase Federal Financial Assistance Grants back to where they should be,” Cr Harvie said.
“The other big thing for our region is the Water Act Review.
“We have to join with our local state and federal members to fight against any buybacks from this moment on because any further buybacks would be devastating for our communities.”
The extraordinary meeting may have lasted less than half an hour, but it wasn’t without controversy.
Cr Gen Campbell moved motions on the voting method and length of the deputy mayor’s term, both of which were rejected, splitting the council vote.
Cr Gorey said he felt council was still well equipped to productively make decisions despite the rift.
“The thing I see as most important is being respectful,” he said.
“Let people know where you’re coming from and bring them together.
“I fully believe showing respect achieves a lot, obviously you’ve got to have the right policies as well, but the number one thing is respect for each other and for staff.”
