Multiple studies indicate that hearing loss can be linked to the onset of both dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Echuca Moama Hearing chief audiologist Tina Dennett has 25 years of experience in the hearing industry.
“Research has shown that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing,” Ms Dennett said.
Research suggests that the early fitting of hearing aids can help reduce the onset of dementia.
As with most medical issues, it’s best to intervene early than delay seeking professional advice.
“The earlier you do something about your hearing, the more successful you will be with hearing aids,” Ms Dennett said.
“Having regular hearing tests is just as important as getting your eyes or blood pressure checked, it’s something everybody should do.”
It’s also imperative to look after your hearing whenever and however you can.
“Even if you’re 70 it doesn’t make any difference,” Ms Dennett said.
“If you’re mowing the lawn or working with power tools, you really should be wearing hearing protection.
“It’s never too late to protect your hearing.”
Echuca Moama Hearing offers hearing assessments for adults; private, pensioners and Department of Veteran Affairs, as well as children. No referral is required.
If medical intervention is required, hearing aid fittings are also on offer.
“The hearing aids today are so small and discreet that people shouldn’t be ashamed of wearing hearing aids anymore,” Ms Dennett said.
“The technology has improved so much.
“You can listen to music or stream mobile phone calls directly to your hearing aids.
“They can even detect if you have a fall. Hearing aids are now rechargeable with no more fiddly batteries or on/off switches.
“They’re more than just an amplifying device,” she said.
The clinic also provides tinnitus assessments, industrial hearing tests and wax removal using micro suction rather than syringing.
Ms Dennett opened Echuca Moama Hearing in July this year.
The clinic is independent of any manufacturers and is locally owned and run.
