Emergency services were called to Bunnaloo Rd, about 15km west of Mathoura, after the livestock truck rolled while negotiating a bend about 1am on Friday, October 2.
“The driver was trapped for a short time until a local landholder helped him out,” NSW RFS Mid-Murray Zone district co-ordinator Gerard James said.
The driver, an out-of-town contractor aged in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to Echuca hospital in a stable condition with a shoulder injury and abrasions.
The 60 head of cattle aboard the B-double were eventually accounted for, but eight could not be saved.
“Sadly a small number had to be euthanised on scene,” Mr James said.
The truck was significantly damaged in the rollover, forcing heavy haulage operators to right the vehicle before it could be towed.
Mathoura Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, police and council crews attended the scene.
Bunnaloo Rd was closed between Centre Rd and Thyra Rd for more than eight hours while emergency crews dealt with the livestock and recovered the stricken B-double.
The road reopened about 9.30am.
