For Murrumbidgee Council payroll officer Kesaya Reitano, that journey began in 2012 when she commenced a school-based traineeship in business services with the former Murrumbidgee Shire Council while still completing her secondary education.
What started as an opportunity to learn and gain practical workplace experience has developed into a successful career spanning 14 years in local government.
Today, Kesaya manages council's payroll function - a role that requires attention to detail, accuracy and a strong understanding of complex payroll systems and legislation.
Her work helps ensure council employees are paid correctly and on time, making her role an essential part of council's day-to-day operations.
Her career progression demonstrates how traineeships can provide a strong foundation for long-term employment and professional growth.
Reflecting on her journey, Kesaya said starting as a school-based trainee gave her valuable hands-on experience and helped build confidence in the workplace.
“It also opened the door to a career in local government that I might never have considered otherwise,” she said.
In addition to her payroll responsibilities, she also serves as the union representative for the north side of Murrumbidgee Council, supporting and advocating for her colleagues across the organisation.
Kesaya said one of the most rewarding aspects of her career has been the opportunity to continue learning and developing new skills.
“I've been able to take on new responsibilities, adapt to new systems and continue growing professionally while supporting my local community,” she said.
Murrumbidgee Council is proud to support training and development opportunities that help employees build skills, gain experience and achieve their career goals.
Stories like Kesaya's highlight the important role traineeships and apprenticeships can play in creating meaningful career pathways for local people.
As we celebrate National Skills Week, Murrumbidgee Council recognises the contribution of skilled employees and the value of investing in learning and development, ensuring a strong and capable workforce for the future.
