NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration that recognises the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The week provides a chance for all Australians to learn about and celebrate the world's oldest continuing cultures.
On Thursday, July 9, Njernda hosted two simultaneous events, a Women’s Day and a Men’s Day, dedicated to creating spaces to celebrate men and women in the community.
Men from across the region gathered at Tindarra Resort, while women were pampered at Dungala Event Centre.
Each event featured a catered lunch, door prizes, gift bags and dedicated entertainment, while providing an opportunity for Aboriginal men and women to reconnect and celebrate culture.
Mr NAIDOC for 2026 Malik Day said it provided an opportunity to come together and check in on one another.
“It's about coming together. This year's theme is 50 years of deadly, and for black fellas, ‘deadly' means celebrating our achievements and being good with each other,” he said.
“Those that are struggling, it's a bit harder for them to ask for assistance, and I think building a bit of a newer culture as well as respecting the old culture is good. Just getting around each other.”
At the women’s event, youth and wellbeing team co-ordinator Nadine Wright said the celebration was especially special in its 50th year.
“We want to celebrate our local Aboriginal women in our community,” she said.
Riverine Herald photographers Jordan Townrow and Jemma Jones captured some of the action from the events.
