The plan was funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements following the 2022 floods, and recognises the lasting impact natural disasters can have on rural communities.
It also fulfils council’s legislative requirement to develop and implement a disability action plan, while reinforcing its commitment to ensuring every resident feels valued, welcome, safe and connected.
Chief executive Geoff Rollinson said the document had been shaped by extensive community input.
More than 1100 people contributed feedback through the review of council’s previous Social Inclusion Strategy, the development of the Gannawarra Shire Council Plan 2025-2029 and Community Vision 2040, and the six-month Let’s Talk About the Weather community engagement program.
A further public consultation period was held during March and April 2025, with additional feedback resulting in a minor amendment to the final document.
“Council thanks all residents who helped shape Thriving Together: A plan for a diverse, inclusive and resilient Gannawarra and looks forward to working with residents, communities and other stakeholders to implement the document’s measures to ensure that every resident can continue to thrive into the future,” Mr Rollinson said.
The strategy identifies social inclusion, resilience and stronger community connections as key priorities, with council aiming to improve accessibility, strengthen participation and ensure residents are better supported during times of adversity.
