CFA District 22 assistant chief fire officer Peter Bell said the fire started in grass at Bailieston, north-west of Nagambie, shortly before 2pm on Thursday, October 22.
It burnt through about four hectares of grass, which included a number of round bales of hay that were in a paddock, Mr Bell said.
Firefighters from four CFA brigades fought the fire, containing it quickly.
A community information alert for Bailieston was put out by VicEmergency, warning that there was hay that had caught fire and that it would generate a lot of smoke, but there was no threat to the community.
At about 3.10pm, the CFA handed the further monitoring of any flares-ups from the fire back to the farmer.
