Indigenous dance workshops benefit students

Over 1200 school children across Gannawarra Shire Council recently attended a series of Indigenous Outreach Project events.

The project’s talented hip-hop dance troop led seven school workshops from Monday, March 3 to Thursday, March 6 across the region.

Council chief executive Geoff Rollinson said the project uses the arts to communicate with students and benefit their health.

“The Indigenous Outreach Project is renowned for successfully using dance and music to foster change and deliver healthy and positive messages,” he said.

“Keeping communities healthy physically and mentally is one way our communities can continue to prosper.”

A united approach led by the council made the workshops possible, along with Northern District Community Health, Mallee District Aboriginal services, and other agencies.

The workshops complement the council’s Innovative Gannawarra Reconciliation Action Plan 2024-26.

The plan aims to create a municipality where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and non-Indigenous people can live, thrive and collaborate in respect and harmony.
