BREAKFAST MEETING
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Echuca Lions Club started November with a breakfast meeting on Melbourne Cup morning at Rich River Golf Club.
The meeting, now in its 41st year, was a terrific event with many sweeps drawn.
Everyone who attended had an enjoyable morning.
FRANK PROVES A SPECIAL GUEST
Following two cancellations due to COVID and then the floods, the Echuca Lions Club finally welcomed Frank Gumbleton as our guest speaker.
Frank won two VFL/AFL premierships during a decorated 147-game career with the North Melbourne Football Club.
He was a member of the Kangaroos’ first-ever flag winning team in 1975.
Frank enjoyed further premiership success two years later when North Melbourne prevailed in the 1977 grand final replay after playing out a draw with Collingwood in the original decider.
Frank gave a great talk which was appreciated by all members.
Special moment: Echuca Lions Club president Kevin Woolnough with Josie Drakatos following the unveiling of the plaque in honour of her late husband John, a long-time Lions member.
VALE JOHN DRAKATOS
We are saddened to report the death of member John Drakatos.
A plaque was placed on the club’s Memorial Wall.
John’s wife Josie and his family attended the unveiling of the plaque.
Lion Barry Higgins delivered a report of John’s life and a big roll-up of members were in attendance.
BEARS PROVE POPULAR
During recent years, the Echuca Lions Club has purchased small cuddly bear toys and given them to Ambulance Service employees to pass onto children.
The club recently bought approximately 100 of the toys and handed them out to children during the visit to Rochester by Ian “Macca” McNamara and his very popular ABC program Australia All Over.
The kids loved the toys and we were proud to be a part of such a terrific day.
It was a part of a big day for the Echuca Lions, who also cooked breakfast at the event.
A huge crowd was in attendance from across Victoria and southern NSW to see Macca.

TRAILER BARBIE CALLED ON
At the request of the Campaspe Shire, the Echuca Lions Club did the cooking on our trailer barbie in the Hopwood Gardens as part of the council’s 16 Days of Activism event.
The 16 Days of Activism is an annual international campaign which aims to eliminate men’s violence against women, community by community and workplace by workplace.
