Echuca Regional Health stomal therapy nurse Linda Rasmussen says there’s a real stigma around having a stoma bag, leading patients to hide their condition out of embarrassment.
To help break the silence, a new support group has launched in Echuca to connect individuals living with a stoma, giving them a place to share experiences, exchange tips and discuss the day-to-day realities of their journey.
“We wanted to create an environment for people in our local community where they could meet and feel safe to discuss the issues they’re going through,” she said.
“It’s also really good to just discuss it with other people who know and understand. We can offer support and an environment where they can feel safe and talk about what they need to talk about.”
A stoma is a small surgically created opening in the abdomen that is used to remove body waste, such as faeces and urine, into a collection bag.
The support group is open to anyone living with a stoma, as well as family members and carers who support individuals living with a stoma.
Initial meetings will focus on peer connection, with future plans to feature guest speakers including dietitians and product specialists to provide advice and education.
The next support group meeting will take place on Monday, December 7, from 10am to 11am at Monkee & Co, located at 531 High St, Echuca. Meetings will continue to run on the first Monday of every second month.
