Dragon riders swooped among cats wearing hats, while Wally went missing, but I’ll tell you a Thing 2, or maybe just one Thing, all was well because a trio of Michael Jacksons spotted his distinctive red and white stripes through the flurry of tinsel and masks, inflatable suits and footy jerseys, and brought him back to the parade.

It was creative chaos as kids — and teaching staff — dived into Book Week celebrations at St Anne’s College in Kialla on August 25.
The theme of this year’s annual literature celebratory week is ‘Symphony of Stories’, and there was no shortage of tales to tell how characters were chosen and costumes came together at the college’s junior school.
Year 3 student Harrison Wright dressed as Dog Man from author Dav Pilkey’s popular series of books.
“My mum made my costume,” he said, as he lifted his cardboard canine head to speak to The News.
“She liked to make me a costume of my favourite book.”
Among the fairies, princesses and fairytale costumes, such as Little Red Riding Hood, were friend groups who’d co-ordinated character sets, showing up to school as animated collective casts risen from the pages of their best-loved books.
A.A. Milne’s beloved Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore arrived looking like they’d just stepped in from the Hundred Acre Wood, while some teachers matched their enthusiastic students’ efforts, including Year 4 co-teaching team Eliza Linehan and Ryleigh Shannon, who rolled in channelling their inner Jack and Jill with complementary costumes.
After the morning parade, students from Foundation to Year 6 listened to principal Anthony Butts read Kate Simpson’s How to move a zoo, a Children’s Book Council of Australia finalist last year, before moving into their house groups for more Book Week-related activities.
