After many bad breakups, one involving 59 messages from an ex, the bubbly yet unapologetic lyricism of Go Away (Garbage Tip) landed on paper naturally for her.
“I really wanted to write a breakup anthem, and I feel like I’ve had enough, in a funny way, terrible experiences to write an album,” she said.
The track, due out on Friday, September 4, proves that sometimes taking the trash out can feel so good.
Written from a compilation of bad dating experiences, Go Away (Garbage Tip) captures the freedom that comes from walking away from someone who never deserved you.
“I love the idea of having something in brackets in the title because it kind of gives its own story,” she said.
“‘Go away’, is like, I want you to leave me alone.
“And ‘garbage tip’, is like, this is where you should go.”
With Kirrilee always envisioning the release as a light-hearted breakup anthem, the song turns emotional frustration into something fun and cheeky.
Kirrilee’s fearless honesty for writing songs that seem like “the group chat got leaked” looks to resonate with anyone going through a breakup, helping them laugh, heal and run.
Her new music video, dropping September 25, is centred around girlhood and the idea of relying on your friends around you when going through a breakup.
“I’ve used excuses like ‘I need to wash my hair’, to get out of a date,” Kirrilee said.
“So, the music video is about me calling out my friends and asking for help to act out terrible excuses I’ve used.”
Coming off the back of a breakout year, the Shepparton-born, Melbourne-based pop artist has received major support from community and commercial radio stations, both national and internationally.
Kirrilee made her Triple J radio debut with her newest release Go Away (Garbage Tip), a milestone she describes as “just crazy”.
Adding to her forthcoming EP, Smile! You’re On Camera, Go Away (Garbage Tip) is a sweet reminder that sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is just take the trash out.
