The team have named themselves the Deni Dinosaurs and will play 12 games over the next 12 weeks at Deniliquin Stadium.
Walking Basketball is a modified version of basketball and is specifically designed for adults aged 65 and older.
There’s no age limit - if you can walk, you can play walking basketball.
The walking basketball program in Deniliquin is part of a research project being conducted by Murrumbidgee Local Health District’s Healthy Ageing for Independence team.
It will survey participants to determine the benefits to health, whether walking basketball is safe, feasible, and enjoyable for older men, and whether it should continue when the research has been completed.
Health promotion officer and researcher Adelle Kennedy said discussions with men suggest they are looking for men-only exercise options, and an activity that is competitive and a bit more energetic.
“A search for suitable activities identified walking basketball as an option,” she said.
“We hope that at the end of the pilot, Walking Basketball is introduced as a permanent activity in Deniliquin and is successfully introduced in other communities across the region.”
Becoming a dinosaur is free, and there’s a free morning tea after each game.
The first game was held Tuesday this week.
