Now, as National Reconciliation Week begins, a new generation of local students is stepping up to carry that torch.
National Reconciliation Week takes place from Thursday, May 28 to Wednesday, June 3, with the theme of ‘All In’, calling on all Australians to listen, learn and take meaningful action towards reconciliation.
In Echuca, meaningful action begins as the community is invited to join Campaspe Shire’s annual Walk for Reconciliation on Friday, May 29.
At this year’s walk, Uncle Keith will be recognised for his inspiring vision and unwavering dedication, which has guided the Community Reconciliation Walk for almost a decade, strengthening cultural connection across the region.
However, the day also marks a significant shift ‒ every step taken will be youth-led.
VCE Vocational Major students from the First Nations Leadership Group at Echuca College have taken the lead on the event’s design and delivery, bringing fresh energy to Campaspe’s reconciliation journey.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell said it was “especially meaningful” to see young people leading the way from design to delivery of the event.
“Their voices are shaping how we come together, and that leadership is something our whole community can be proud of,” he said.
Community members are encouraged to join the day, which will begin at 10am with a smoking ceremony at Alton Reserve before participants begin the walk through Echuca.
The group will walk to the Aquatic Reserve for warm drinks and cultural performances. Participants can also enjoy activities and conversations with community members.
