Croquet Report | January 17

By Riverine Herald

Echuca Moama

Last Friday, January 10, saw a small number of players hitting the courts and they started early to try and beat the heat.

Sandra Alstin along with hubby John both won two games each.

The winner was John Alstin with two games plus a net hoop score of +16.

Sandra had a plus net hoop score of +15.

All members played doubles and there was a threesome game also.

It was great to see Jim Maynard come along to visit Echuca Moama and to have some great games with our club.

He was surprised by how far we have come since he moved.

Jim was one of the founders of our club along with Roly Hall.

Jim became our president until they moved up to Harvey Bay.

Members of our club said Jim still has some good moves and hasn’t lost his touch on the courts.

On Monday, there were 18 members who took to the courts and showed the Christmas break was good to them.

Some members excelled in their games and played some excellent shots.

There were plenty of jump shots with hoops in one also.

Our winner was John Tarrant who won his three games with a net hoop score of +15.

Runner-up was Jack Clee, winning two games with a net hoop score of +15.

Jump shots were won by Trevor Peters with four as John Alstin had two.

Vince Jessen, Elayne Pickthall, Peter Van Der Zande and Mavis Peters all had one each.

Elayne Pickthall also got a hoop in one.

It was great to see everyone back on the courts and having such a good time, while catching up with some of their friends.

Anyone wishing to learn a low impact sport with friendly people can come along to the tennis and croquet courts at Victoria Park.

Playing days are Monday and Friday at 8.30am for 9am start.

We have free lessons for those who would like to learn how to play the game.

Please contact John Alstin on 0418 505 614.

Rich River

Last Thursday, the club had 11 members playing golf croquet singles and a trio.

The winner, Jim Gunn was the only player to win all three games — he finished with a nett hoop score of +8.

Four players had won two games each and the day’s runner-up was Dave Maher with +5 hoops, ahead of Ian Grant and Russ Smyth, both on +2.

On Tuesday this week, 16 golf croquet players played singles.

Two people won all three games and the day’s winner again was Jim Gunn with a nett hoop score of +7, ahead of runner-up Di Smyth on +5.

Hoops in one were scored by Helen Brierley and Pam Kane.

Croquet is a fun, strategic, low-impact game and is a great way to get physical and mental exercise and meet new people.

Rich River Croquet Club welcomes visitors and new members to join in golf croquet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with an 8.30am start.
