Blues held down by dominant leader

Picola United held leader Waaia to one of its quieter offensive performances, but couldn’t get any attack going of its own.

Picola United couldn’t get anything going offensively at the weekend against a league leading Waaia, heavily beaten in Picola District Football League.

The Blues actually did quite well around their own end at Waaia Recreation Reserve, holding the unbeaten leader to its second-lowest total of the season, but were themselves held to two points in a toothless attacking performance.

Things looked ominous early on when the Bombers led 23-0 at quarter-time, going on to post a 6.8 (44) first half, while Picola remained scoreless.

The Blues cut the Waaia attacking output in half after the break, but were unable to get the ball forward to make the most of their resilient defence.

The Bombers’ Charlie Burrows was the only player to kick multiple goals, finding three.

A fifth successive defeat sees Picola (4-5) remain in 12th position on the table, sitting above only the winless four sides.

The Blues will hope to arrest the slide when they challenge the mid-table Dookie United at home at Picola Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
