Bombers no match for Colbo

A difficult first half put Leitchville-Gunbower on the back foot as it fell to Colbinabbin by 45 points in the Heathcote District Football League on Saturday.

Leitchville-Gunbower fell to its second straight defeat in the Heathcote District Football League, with the Bombers being unable to recover from a slow start against Colbinabbin.

Leitchville had notched back-to-back wins before being outclassed by Lockington Bamawm United last week and, although the underdog against a Colbo side that had made a strong start to the season, the Grasshoppers were coming off successive losses.

The visitors needed a response against the Bombers to keep up with league leader Mount Pleasant and Leitchville made a slow start at Gunbower Recreation Reserve, only kicking one goal while conceding four and facing a 22-point deficit at the first change.

The Bombers could have been trailing by more if not for Colbo’s inaccuracy, although that improved in the second quarter, as the Hoppers kicked 5.1 while the Bombers started to find their feet with 3.2. But the visitors still held a commanding 9.6 (60) to 4.3 (27) advantage at half-time.

Leitchville’s inability to turn the water off on Colbo’s attack in the first half set the visitors up to secure a comfortable victory during the final two quarters, although both were quite even as the two sides traded three goals each in the third term.

Despite the Bombers improving as the game wore on, Colbo prevented the hosts from threatening its solid margin and edged the final quarter with three goals to two, condemning Leitchville to a 15.13 (103) to 9.4 (58) defeat.

The Bombers were unmoved on the ladder despite the loss — still sitting sixth — and they will look to not only snap the two-game losing streak, but restore an even record against struggling Elmore this Saturday.
