The program encourages clubs to create initiatives to promote road safety among its players, volunteers, and supporters — the maximum reward being $10,000.
The Cats didn’t receive the maximum, though. They were granted just over $4000 for their 2026 initiatives.
The main one was organising courtesy buses after club functions and home matches, particularly to Echuca.
Secretary Maddy Combridge said the amount was more than the club had received previously.
And the money will only further support its work in this area.
“It helps us pay for the bus each weekend,” Combridge said.
“That's not something the players have to pay for, it's something the club provides, so getting that money helps us supply that.”
LBU uses the Rochester Rotary Club’s community bus and Combridge said it was “handy” having club staff able to take on the driving duties.
The club also demonstrated its use of TAC materials and completed the commission’s road safety survey to win the grant.
Earning the money was not a specific goal but rather a by-product of being clued in to ensuring all members are safe.
“There's no particular reason we value road safety,” Combridge said.
“We just want to make sure everyone stays safe on the road, especially being out of town.
“With people travelling at night and after games, we just want to make sure everyone gets home safely.”
Elmore and Colbinabbin were among the other local clubs rewarded.
