A mix of youngsters and experienced heads were on court down at Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve as the Redlegs looked to build some momentum following on from a bye week last time out.
Previous to this, Tally’s emerging talents had dispatched of Undera with a 67-16 away masterclass victory in round five, following on another bye week and a draw against Merrigum and an opening day loss against Shepparton East.
The Wombats appeared to be determined to continue their recent purple patch, having won four out of the first five fixtures and they proved the brighter side in the first period with scoring 11 goals to the Redlegs’ six.
However, the hosts did rally in the second quarter, demonstrating the best of their qualities after settling into the clash.
They more than matched their opponents during this stage of the game – tallying up nine goals to their opponents’ eight – to set up a grandstand second half in the contest.
Following half-time, it was clear that the visitors were in no mood to let the spoils slip from their grasps as they gained what proved to be an unassailable foothold in the contest scoring 17 goals in a steely third quarter spectacle.
Closing out the victory, Lancaster’s uncompromising approach paid dividends in the attacking third as it added a further 13 points to put the seal on a 49-28 win and earn all four points on the road.
Despite the loss, Tally coach Bree Giles was pleased with the efforts of her hard-working troops as she spoke of the promising signs that connections are continuing to build within her ranks.
“The second quarter was our most settled quarter, we’re a new team and those connections are building from week to week,” she said.
“We’ve got a good mix of experience and some new players and so it’s definitely going to take some time to build that, but we’re confident as we go through the season that the scorelines will look much closer.
”The scoreline didn’t really reflect the performance today – we felt we were really in it, we made more errors than them today and in the end that was the game.
“The loss is obviously disappointing, but I don’t want the girls to be too disappointed with their efforts today, they were great.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming fixtures against Violet Town and Rushworth, Giles was left satisfied that her side is moving in the right direction with 10 game weeks coming up.
“We’ve got experience in each third of the court so that does make it a little easier to bring that youth in,” she said.
“That’s supported by good strength by Tamara (Skinner) in goals, Rebecca (Brett) and myself in defence and Georgia (Grace) in the mid-court.
“As connections keep building with experience, I know we’ll come good by September.”
