A couple of events headline this weekend’s sports offering, as a clash between two Heathcote District Football Netball League sides welcomes a former AFL star, while Echuca Moama Hockey Club is celebrating an important round on its calendar.

In Goulburn Valley League football and netball, Echuca faces Shepparton United at Echuca South Recreation Reserve, the Murray Bombers’ senior football side looking for a sixth straight win at 2pm, while the A-grade netballers look to bounce back from a first loss at 2.15pm.
Meanwhile, Moama’s two sides enter the weekend’s Murray league action against Cobram on minor winless streaks, the senior footballers beginning at 2pm, while A-grade netball starts at 1.30pm, at Moama Recreation Reserve.
Elsewhere in the competition, Echuca United faces Numurkah at Numurkah Showgrounds, the Eagles footballers hunting three straight wins at 2pm, while the A-grade netballers are scheduled to play at 1.30pm.
Tongala is back in Murray league action this weekend after a bye, taking on Deniliquin at Tongala Recreation Reserve, the Blues’ footballers looking to build on their strong display last time out at 2pm, while the A-grade netball side is eyeing a fourth straight win at 1.30pm.
Tongala has won its past three matches in the Murray Netball League.
To the Heathcote league, where local sides Lockington Bamawm United and Leitchville-Gunbower are facing off at Lockington Recreation Reserve, the Cats netball side aiming for their first win of 2026 against an improving Bombers at 2.30pm.
The senior football clash at 3.20pm is highly-anticipated for multiple reasons, Locky and Leitchville both with two wins this season, sitting third and fourth, respectively, while the Cats will be boosted with former Essendon star Dyson Heppell featuring in their side this weekend.
Finally, to the Picola District Football Netball League, where Picola United is pitted against Jerilderie this weekend at Picola Recreation Reserve, both Blues teams looking to prolong perfect starts to their seasons, with senior football at 2.05pm and A-grade netball starting at 1.30pm.
Meanwhile, Mathoura will face Dookie United at Mathoura Recreation Reserve, with both Timbercutters sides having the opposite ambition in hunting a first win, senior football beginning at 2.05pm and A-grade netball starting at 1.30pm.
Soccer
The Echuca-Moama Border Raiders men will look to rectify a heavy loss last time out in the Football Victoria Bendigo League 2, taking on Golden City this Saturday at Jack Eddy Oval, with kick-off at 3pm.
Meanwhile, the women are flying and will search for a fourth straight victory to start their 2026 campaign on Sunday at the same venue against Swan Hill, that fixture set to start at 11am.
Women’s football
With a perfect record intact, Moama’s youth girls travel to Shepparton Swans on Sunday for a meeting between first and second on the ladder, the game taking place at Princess Park and beginning at 10.30am.
Moama’s women will mirror the men by also playing at Moama Recreation Reserve this weekend, facing Tatura on Sunday at 2pm, the Magpies looking for a third win from four to start 2026.
Hockey
Both senior Echuca Moama Hockey Club sides will play at Echuca College this Saturday against Shepparton Strikers, the women looking to bounce back from a first loss at 12.30pm, while the men are still after a first win, their match starting at 2pm.
The round three fixtures are a part of the River Rats’ Good Sports Game Ready Round and Women’s Round, which will be dedicated to one of its life members in Carol Gulson, with funds raised from a barbecue and bake sale on the day being donated to the Echuca Cancer and Wellness Centre in her memory.
