Locky outclassed in one-sided second half

Lockington Bamawm United has fallen to a second successive defeat in the Heathcote District Football League, the Cats being undone by the reigning premier Mount Pleasant at Lockington Recreation Reserve.

Locky entered the clash having split its opening two fixtures, going close to winning both after a close defeat to White Hills last time out, while Pleasant had a perfect record through its two games.

Facing a contender was always going to be a challenge for the Cats, who felt the full force of the Mounts’ capabilities early on, the visitors booting five majors to Lockington’s two in the first quarter.

In an early season litmus test to see how they would match up against one of the league’s best, the Cats clawed their way back in the second term, kicking four goals to Pleasant’s two, the visitors still leading 7.9 (51) to 6.2 (38) at half-time.

Whatever Cam Carter said to his Mounts at the main break clearly sparked a reaction in the third quarter, Pleasant piling on six goals in its best period of the afternoon, putting itself in a commanding position heading into the fourth.

The lead was lengthened in the final term, the Mounts adding another three majors, with only inaccuracy preventing a greater margin, as the Cats only mustered two goals for the second half, Mount Pleasant prevailing 16.17 (113) to 8.6 (54).

Another defeat for Lockington means it has slipped down to seventh on the league ladder after its three matches, a less than ideal start for a side looking to return to the finals in 2026.

Up next, the Cats will look to respond when they travel to Heathcote on Saturday, the Saints having notched their first win against Huntly in round three.
