The Magpies were immediately on the back foot at Congupna Recreation Reserve as The Road took control in the first quarter, kicking five goals while holding Moama to a behind.
The onslaught continued in the second term as the league leader opened the period with three quick majors.
Moama finally struck its first goal midway through the quarter, but that only momentarily halted Congupna, which booted the next four majors.
The Magpies closed the first half with their second goal, but the road back was a long one at half-time, Shannon Keam’s side trailing 2.2 (14) to 12.5 (77).
Moama performed much better in the second half, winning the third and fourth quarters, but it still fell well short of an unlikely comeback.
Congupna was kept to five behinds in the third and 1.4 in the fourth as its scoring slowed right down.
But the Magpies couldn’t inflict enough damage at the other end, only booting three majors in the half to fall to a 5.3 (33) to 13.14 (92) defeat.
The 59-point loss for Moama followed a 102-point defeat to Mulwala in round 14, with the Magpies (7-6) now a game behind Tongala, which holds the last finals spot in sixth and crucially has a much better percentage.
Keam’s side does have a game in hand on Tonny and fifth-placed Numurkah, but it needs to recapture form if it is to break back into the top six.
There’s no better way for Moama to do that than by beating Tongala, with the two sides facing off in a critical clash in round 16.
