Murray Bombers look for vengeance on big weekend

Echuca is chasing redemption against one of the two sides to best it this season, Seymour.

Another packed weekend of sport is on the horizon as various leagues creep closer to or reach the brink of finals.

Coming off its second senior football defeat Echuca is looking to avenge its first in this week’s Goulburn Valley League action.

The Murray Bombers will host Seymour at Tongala Recreation Reserve in the first week of a split round, looking to turn around an 8.10 to 13.14 defeat to the Lions in round seven.

In netball, the ladder-leading Echuca faces a stiff test against the fourth-ranked Lions, who are looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats.

In the Murray league, Moama’s seniors are facing the prospect of missing finals and need a home win over Finley to get the season back on track.

The Mowers need to make up two games over Numurkah in the final four weeks to make the six, but do have the benefit of a game in hand.

Echuca United could give its cross-river rivals a leg up by scoring a win over Numurkah at home at Echuca South Recreation Reserve.

The Eagles’ own finals dreams are gone, but the side still has a chance to match or improve on its 2025 result if it can close out the year with some wins.

Meanwhile, Tongala can take another strong step towards the finals as it visits the already eliminated Deniliquin.

The Blues are a win or two away from locking in a post-season berth, sitting fifth and two games clear of Moama in seventh.

In netball, Moama and Tongala will be expected to pick up another win, both sides already locked in for the post-season, but jockey for favourable finals match-ups.

Echuca United is chasing a fourth win and could do serious damage to Numurkah’s finals ambitions with a win.

In Heathcote District Football League, Lockington-Bamawm United and Leitchville-Gunbower are engaged in a two-week showdown for the last finals berth.

Only one of Lockington-Bamawm United and Leitchville-Gunbower will make senior football finals.

Both clubs are 7-7, the Bombers holding a seven percentage point advantage.

This weekend, both clubs are up against already confirmed finals opposition as the Bombers travel to North Bendigo and the Cats visit Colbinabbin.

In netball, both sides are out of finals contention, but can still improve their finishing positions over the remaining fortnight.

Picola District league is also in its final two weeks of fixtures.

In football, Picola United is travelling to Strathmerton in a challenging clash, while Mathoura is also up against it at home to Jerilderie.

On the netball court, Picola United looks more favoured against lower-table Strathmerton and is desperate for the win as it looks to cling to the last finals spot.

The Blues are level with Rennie on points.

After their first win at the weekend, Mathoura’s netballers will be chasing a competitive result against the Demons, another of the lower sides.

Women’s/Girls’

Moama has one tune-up fixture remaining in the Goulburn Murray Women’s and Girls’ League before heading into do-or-die finals matches.

The sides are headed into home fixtures against Cobram in the final round on Sunday.

After each facing a rare defeat against Shepparton United at the weekend, the games serve as an opportunity to regroup and refocus before the finals series.

Soccer

In Football Victoria Greater Bendigo, the Border Raiders men are a few wins away from locking in the top spot and a potential promotion to League 1.

Holding a healthy lead of two points and a game in hand over the leading challenger, the Echuca-Moama side is on the road on Sunday, battling midtable Castlemaine Goldfields Gold at Chewton Soldiers Memorial Park.

The women’s side, also in the hunt for the top spot, but trailing the leader by two points, has a week off, returning to action on August 8 in a top-of-the-table clash with Swan Hill.
