After starting the year 4-0, Picola United slipped to a second consecutive defeat, well-handled by the ladder-leading Deniliquin Rovers.
The Blues stayed in touch in the first period, but still found themselves five goals down at the first break, 13-8.
The Rovers kicked further into gear in the second and, by the half, the lead stood at 12 goals.
Picola continued to plug away in the second half, but it was more of the same from the Rovers, Deni’s consistency key as it extended the advantage to win 52-29 at the final siren.
Although taking down the Rovers looks a tough ask, Picola’s results still indicate a side in position to challenge for finals.
The Blues have an easier time of things after the general bye, hosting the 2-4 Berrigan at Picola Recreation Reserve on May 30.
Mathoura v Tungamah
In a major mismatch, the winless Timbercutters travelled to the unbeaten Bears, and the contest went to form at Tungamah Recreation Reserve.
Mathoura was dominated in midcourt, scoring only two goals in the first half, while Tungamah hit the target efficiently in the 74-10 rout.
Locked at the bottom of the table, things don’t get much kinder for the Cutters after the bye, as they host the 5-1 Tocumwal at Mathoura Recreation Reserve on May 30.
