At the club’s recent Annual General Meeting, Pat Mansfield was re-elected for his second term as president. Pat is eager to build on the club’s existing foundations and ensure tennis remains one of the most popular and accessible sports in the Yarrawonga community. With Pat at the helm and a hardworking committee supporting him, the club is looking forward to another successful season.
North East Veterans circuit returns
The calendar of events is already filling up, with the first major occasion arriving this Sunday, October 4, when Yarrawonga hosts the opening round of the North East Veterans Circuit.
The day features a doubles event for players aged 30 and over. Unlike traditional tournaments, players enter individually and are paired with others of a similar standard, ensuring everyone enjoys close and competitive matches.
Each participant is guaranteed four sets, but the social aspect is arguably just as important. Morning tea and lunch will be provided, creating a welcoming environment where locals can enjoy tennis, good company and community spirit.
Wilby Tennis Association
Another long-standing regional tradition begins in mid-October, with the Wilby Tennis Association launching its new season.
The competition brings together teams from Burramine, Mulwala, Savernake, Telford, Tungamah and Wilby. Teams consist of four men and four women, with each player competing in four sets per match.
The Association has been a breeding ground for many of the district’s finest players over the decades and continues to attract competitors of all ages and abilities.
Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to contact Association President John Wright, who continues to play an important role in maintaining this much-loved competition.
GMLTA Saturday afternoon tennis
After returning last season, Yarrawonga will once again be part of the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association’s Saturday afternoon competition.
The club will register a Division 3 team, with both regular and fill-in players needed to ensure a strong showing throughout the season.
If a few more players register their interest, there is also a possibility of entering a Division 4 team.
Saturday morning junior program
While tournaments and competitions are central to the club’s calendar, the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club also prides itself on providing opportunities for players of all standards to enjoy the game.
The Saturday morning junior program resumes on October 10 and caters for children aged between five and sixteen.
The program is structured to suit different stages of development. Younger players are introduced through the Hot Shots program, which uses smaller courts and focuses on having fun, hitting balls and learning the basics.
As children progress, coaching becomes more focused on technique and skill development, particularly serving and the fundamentals of the game.
The final stage is match play, where juniors put their skills into practice with three sets of tennis each Saturday morning.
With more than 200 children already registered, the club is working hard to ensure that no child misses out on the opportunity to participate.
Junior squad and coaching
For juniors seeking to further develop their game, the club offers a Squad program on Wednesday afternoons under the guidance of experienced coach Grant Kendall.
Grant joined the club last season and is enthusiastic about developing young players through a range of drills designed to improve stroke production, movement and tactical awareness.
He also runs group coaching sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, while private lessons are available for players wanting a more individualised focus.
Tennis can be a challenging sport to master, and Grant believes the best results come when young players combine regular coaching with opportunities to compete and practise their skills.
Social tennis for adults
Opportunities are also plentiful for adults who wish to combine fitness, competition and social connection.
Aggregate-style social tennis is available during the week, with ladies playing on Tuesday mornings from 9.30 am and men gathering on Wednesday afternoons from 1.00 pm.
These sessions are designed to be welcoming and flexible, giving newcomers the chance to try tennis without any obligation to attend every week.
Many who give it a go quickly find themselves hooked!
Midweek competitions
For those looking for more structured competition, the midweek team competitions run from late October through to March.
Men play on Tuesday nights and women on Thursday nights, with matches commencing at 6.00 pm.
Players enter individually and are placed into teams to ensure even contests. Each participant enjoys three sets of doubles, with the atmosphere focused as much on social connections off the court as it is on the tennis itself.
Membership offers great value
Membership is now open and continues to offer excellent value, with the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club proud to provide some of the most affordable grass court memberships in country Victoria. More than just tennis
The Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club is more than just a sporting organisation. It is a gathering place for the community, where young children, seasoned veterans and everyone in between can come together to enjoy the game.
