A maiden race win to Echuca jockey Rose Hammond highlighted the country racing meeting at Kerang on Monday, fittingly on the Gwenda Johnstone-trained Bon Shadow, which notched its fourth career victory.
Hammond’s 20th race start yielded a win in race four, guiding the six-year-old home by a length in the Autopro Kerang Summer Sprint Handicap, Bon Shadow’s first victory since October 2021.
This comes after Hammond realised a lifelong dream of riding professionally with a debut start for Johnstone on Red Jewels at Kyneton on November 28.
With the track rating a Good 4 on a warm day, the six-race card featured several Echuca trainers in action.
The Michael Cornish and Donna Gaskin-trained Xena’s Reward placed for the first time in its career, running second in the Nutrien Ag Solutions Kerang Handicap, while Neil Farley guided Daryl Archard’s Common Request to third.
Meanwhile, the Rhys Archard-trained Limbering placed ninth in the final race of the day over 1400m.
