The Magpies are making their maiden foray into senior women’s football in the hopes of capitalising on the success of their Youth Girls program, one that saw the side compete in the grand final last season.
Women’s football co-ordinator Lauren Davy said providing a senior squad would allow top-age girls to stay at the club once they “age out”.
But despite strong interest in the area for a second senior team to join Echuca in the competition, Moama still needs more players on the track before the start of the season.
“We had expressions of interest just to gauge whether there was any interest or if there were enough people to field a second team in the area,” Davy said.
“That came back to say it was, now we’re trying to get people down to training.
“I think one of the big misconceptions when it comes to women’s footy is that people think they have to be super fit or super talented.
“It’s a great group and there are opportunities to advance your skills, but we’re not looking for AFLW players.”
Last year’s Youth Girls coach Matt McKay has been tapped to oversee the program, and Davy said the club was hoping to foster a “great culture”.
“The key point is building on the success of the Youth Girls,” she said.
“We’ve got a really engaged committee that is supportive and want to see women’s footy at Moama succeed.”
Five teams contested the NCWL senior division in 2022, including grand finalist Echuca. Nathalia is the reigning premier.
More clubs are also expected to be added to the four-team Youth Girls division for 2023.
