In 2002, Tongala’s A-grade netball side won the Goulburn Valley League premiership by defeating Shepparton United in the grand final and last Saturday seven of the players from that side were at Moama Recreation Reserve either coaching, supporting, or still playing.
The Blues were the underdog in the decider, playing a Demons side that was considered a powerhouse of the competition at the time.
The 2002 success was Tongala’s first and only A-grade premiership in the league before it moved to the Murray league in 2006.
The players from the side included Fleur Nurse, Louise Brennan, Alicia White, Vanessa Reid, Jac Elborough, Bree Hanslow, Michelle Hanson, Nicole Chittik, Tracey Hughes and Lisa Drysdale.
But incredibly, in a display of the team’s legacy living on years later, nine daughters of the players from the 2002 side featured across various grades at the weekend for Tongala and Moama.
Those players included Jinaya Nurse, Meg and Gemma Brennan, Isla White, Hollie Reid, Hannah Finn and Maya, Hanna and Ella Hughes.
There ended up being an equal amount of cheer on both sides, as Moama won each of the junior grades, while Tongala won all senior grade match-ups.
